Our Approach to Therapy

At BeYOUtiful Speech Therapy, we are dedicated to providing pediatric speech and language services that honor each child for who they are. We believe in embracing children’s unique interests and strengths rather than trying to change them or fit them into neurotypical "norms." We collaborate closely with families and care teams to thoughtfully tailor our services to meet each child's specific needs and goals. Our sessions prioritize a child-led, play-based approach, ensuring that therapy is both meaningful and enjoyable.

Evaluations

We prioritize meaningful connection during our comprehensive evaluations. Our primary goal is to thoroughly learn about your child’s unique interests, strengths, and specific support needs. Here is what you can expect during a typical evaluation:

  • Caregiver interview

  • Review of past assessments, treatment plans, and/or IEPs

  • Language sample collection and analysis

  • Home video review (if available)

  • Assessment measures (standardized tests will be given only if appropriate)

After the evaluation is completed, we will then create a detailed therapy plan tailored to your child’s needs and review it with you.

Echolalia/Gestalt Language Processing

Gestalt language processing is a natural way of developing language in which children often use gestalts or chunks of language to communicate. At BeYOUtiful Speech Therapy, we support gestalt language processors by using the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) framework, which helps guide children toward developing self-generated language.

You might recognize your child as a gestalt language processor if:

  • They use long scripts from media or communication partners (often after a delay) to express themselves.

  • Their speech has rich intonation but may be unintelligible, resembling lines from a show or a song.

  • They repeat what others say, even if it doesn't align with their intended meaning.

  • They watch their favorite videos repeatedly.

  • They have a deep love for music and listen to the same songs over and over.

  • They have a strong memory for visual and auditory details.

  • They have difficulty with pronouns and may refer to themselves in the third person.

  • They have difficulty answering questions with self-generated language.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) involves various tools and strategies that support children who are primarily non-speaking or those who can speak but are unable to reliably access speech to communicate. BeYOUtiful Speech Therapy offers specialized pediatric speech therapy services for individuals with complex communication needs. We use AAC in natural, child-led interactions, ensuring that each child’s unique abilities and interests are central to our therapy sessions.

How AAC can help a child communicate:

  • Provides an alternative way for children to express their wants, needs, and feelings when speech is not accessible.

  • Enhances autonomy and decision-making abilities.

  • Improves social interactions, fostering deeper connections with loved ones.

  • Reduces communication breakdowns and misunderstandings.

  • Boosts confidence and decreases frustration by offering an effective means of communication.

  • Increases personal safety by enabling children to alert others in emergencies and communicate health concerns.
